11 High-Protein Winter Dinners That Can Help You Lose Weight

Reviewed by Dietitian Christa Brown, M.S., RDN, LD

Warm up on cold winter nights with one of these delicious, nutritious dinner recipes. Not only are these dishes low in calories and high in fiber, but they also boast at least 15 grams of protein per serving to help you feel full and satisfied.

Why is protein important for weight loss? There are several reasons, First, protein helps keep you fuller longer than, say, just eating carbs by themselves. Eating protein with your carbs also helps balance blood sugar so you're less likely to get blood sugar spikes and the subsequent crash—and that "hangry" feeling.

Protein also helps maintain muscle mass (along with strength training). When you lose weight, it's not just fat that you're losing. You're losing excess water and muscle mass—and muscle mass is exactly what you want to keep.

This healthy white turkey chili recipe is gorgeous, with flecks of green from zucchini, oregano and green chiles. To keep the saturated fat low, we use 1 pound of ground turkey and add whole-grain bulgur to boost the volume and fiber in this chili recipe. After all the ingredients are added to the pot, we like to slowly simmer our chili for close to an hour to develop the best flavor, but if you're in a hurry, reduce the liquid by half and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes.
